Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is an internationally standardized Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers of Chinese. It consists of 6 levels. The comparison between the HSK Test, “The Chinese Language Proficiency Standard for Foreigners” and “The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF)” is as follows.

Oral HSKK Exam

The HSKK test is the oral version of the HSK test. It is a proficiency test of spoken Mandarin Chinese that measures the oral communicative ability of non-native Chinese speakers in daily life situations, as well as academic and professional relationships.

The YCT is an international standardized Chinese language test.

academic life. The new YCT consists of a written and an oral test, which are independent of each other. The written test is divided into four levels, namely YCT 1, YCT 2, YCT 3 and YCT 4. The oral test is divided into YCT (Elementary Level) and YCT (Intermediate Level). The different levels of YCT are similar to some of the levels in the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) and the European Union Framework (CEF); the details are as follows:

The BCT (Business Chinese Test) is a Mandarin Chinese proficiency test that measures the communicative ability of non-native Chinese speakers in business situations.

It has a written version consisting of two levels (A and B) and an oral version. The BCT exam evaluates the communicative ability of test takers using Chinese in a wide range of situations related to business, daily life and social interaction. The test primarily offers practicality and communicativeness.

What do you measure and seek to learn at each level?

It allows the student to understand and use a set of very simple phrases and words that serve to meet specific communication needs and prepare him/her for further acquisition of more advanced Chinese language skills. NHSK Level 1 is recommended for students who have studied Chinese language for one academic semester at a rate of 2-3 hours per week and have mastered about 150 frequently used words and the corresponding syntactic structures.

This level measures the student’s ability to use the Chinese language for direct and simple conversations on everyday matters, and to test whether he/she has reached an advanced initial level. NHSK level 2 is recommended for those who have studied Chinese language for two academic semesters (one academic year) at a rate of 2-3 lessons per week and have mastered about 300 frequently used words and the corresponding syntactic structures.

The HSK Level 3 test measures the student’s ability to use the Chinese language to solve basic communicative situations related to daily life, study and work, among others. It is also for most of the communicative situations you may encounter while traveling in China. HSK level 3 is recommended for those who have studied Chinese language for three academic semesters (one and a half academic years) at a rate of 2-3 lessons per week and have mastered about 600 frequently used words and the corresponding syntactic structures.

Level 4 measures the student’s ability to communicate and discuss using the Chinese language on a wide range of topics, as well as to communicate fairly fluently with native Chinese speakers. NHSK Level 4 is recommended for those who have studied Chinese language for four academic semesters (two academic years) at the rate of 2-4 classes per week and have mastered about 1200 frequently used words and the corresponding syntactic structures.

Level 6 measures the student’s ability to listen and understand without any difficulty or to read without difficulty news in Chinese as well as to be able to express their ideas and opinions in Chinese, both in spoken and written language. NHSK Level 6 is recommended for students who have mastered 5000 or more than 5000 frequently used words.

The HSKK Oral Beginner Level measures speaking proficiency in Chinese and its equivalent in the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages are levels 1 and 2, while in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching and Assessment (CEFR) it is equivalent to levels A1 and A2 together. It aims for the student to be able to understand what is being explained and at the same time to be able to express him/herself orally in order to meet basic communicative needs in everyday life. It is designed for those who have studied Chinese language for 1 or 2 semesters and have mastered a few everyday words.

The HSKK Oral Intermediate Level measures speaking proficiency in Chinese and its equivalent in the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages are levels 3 and 4, while in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching and Assessment (CEFR) it is equivalent to levels B1 and B2 together. It aims for the student to be able to understand and maintain a conversation with a native speaker more or less fluently. It is designed for those who have studied Chinese language for 1 or 2 years at a rate of 2-3 lessons per week and have mastered about 900 words of everyday use.

The HSKK Oral Advanced Level measures speaking proficiency in Chinese and its equivalent in the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages is level 5, while in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching and Assessment (CEFR) it is equivalent to levels C1 and C2 together. It aims for the student to be able to understand and express his or her ideas and opinions fluently. It is designed for those who have studied Chinese language for more than 2 years at a rate of 2-3 lessons per week and have mastered about 3000 everyday words.

Participants who are able to pass the YCT (Level I) will be able to understand and use some of the most common phrases and sentences in Chinese and will have the ability to continue their Chinese language studies.

Participants who are able to pass the YCT (Level IV) will be able to communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. When they travel to China, they will be able to handle most forms of communication in Chinese.

BCT (A) is geared towards beginners and is designed to test communicative competencies in Chinese in daily life and during basic business activities.

BCT (B) is aimed at intermediate and advanced students and is designed to test communicative skills in Chinese during complex business activities.

To provide a basis for employers to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native Chinese employees (or candidates) in daily work environments. The score of this test can be used as a reference for employee recruitment, selection and promotion.
