Mandarin Chinese is not the most difficult language in the world

It is estimated that the Chinese language is made up of a total of 500,000 words and that the largest Chinese dictionary contains about 370,000 words. This figure may seem really high and scary for a person starting to study Chinese, but here’s the good news: you only need to know about 5% of all the words to be fluent in Chinese. This means that if you focus your efforts on learning the most common Chinese words you will be able to speak Chinese fluently in no time. By knowing just 100 words, you will be able to understand half of the words in an article or book written in Mandarin Chinese. By knowing the 1,000 most common words, you will understand 75% of Mandarin texts.
