Chinese is one of the oldest languages in the world and its beauty lies in its words. But did you know that just by knowing 1,000 words, you can guess the meaning of 185,000 Chinese words.
It is estimated that the Chinese language is made up of a total of 500,000 words and that the largest Chinese dictionary contains about 370,000 words. This figure may seem really high and scary for a person starting to study Chinese, but here’s the good news: you only need to know about 5% of all the words to be fluent in Chinese.
This means that if you focus your efforts on learning the most common Chinese words you will be able to speak Chinese fluently in no time. By knowing just 100 words, you will be able to understand half of the words in an article or book written in Mandarin Chinese.
By knowing the 1,000 most common words, you will understand 75% of Mandarin texts. In addition, each new word you learn will help you discover the meaning of up to 185 words you have never seen before.
